Les Sorciers Perdus premier Mark’s new score for “The Trail of ’98”
As part of an exclusive event for the Maine Film Center, Mark and Les Sorciers Perdus will premier Mark’s new score for the 1928 silent film The Trail of ’98. This is a lesser-known adventure-romance film set during the Klondike Gold Rush, directed by Clarence Brown, and starring Dolores Del Rio and Ralph Forbes. Come and hear Les Sorciers Perdus present the score live with a screening of this historic film!
Mark Tipton – trumpet
Ryan Blotnick – guitar
Tyler Heydolph – bass
Beau Lisy – drums
“My original score for Clarence Brown’s 1928 silent film, The Trail of ’98, offers a blend of vintage and contemporary jazz, classical, and folk music sonorities, as well as sound signifiers, in order to convey the struggle encountered by the Klondike Gold Rush prospectors. The film’s narrative also includes romance, adventure, aspiration, defeat, and betrayal, so there is no shortage of variety in the requisite musical themes that I have composed. Set against the austerity of the Klondike wilderness, the power imbalance between Jack Locastro (Harry Carey) and Berna (Dolores del Rio), as contrasted with the relatively naïve romance between Berna and Larry (Ralph Forbes), creates a potent metaphor for the need for warm-hearted human kindness in the face of an often cold, inegalitarian, and brutal world.”

LSP Play “Haunted” Silent Films @ Mayo Street Arts
Just in time for Halloween, this evening will feature two very different approaches to “haunted” silent films: Buster Keaton’s comic short “The Haunted House” and F.W. Murnau’s feature-length expressionist psychodrama “The Haunted Castle” – both from 1921! Mark’s new scores highlight both the zany fun of Keaton’s film and the gloomy mystery of Murnau’s lesser-known cinematic gem.
Les Sorciers Perdus (“The Lost Wizards”) has recently premiered Mark’s new silent film scores for Carl Theodor Dreyer’s “Joan of Arc” at MIFF22, F.W. Murnau’s “Nosferatu” at the 1932 Criterion Theatre, Victor Sjostrom’s “The Phantom Carriage” at The Grand, Allan Dwan’s “Robin Hood” at The Strand, and King Vidor’s “The Patsy” in midcoast Maine, as well as scores for comic shorts by Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Charley Bowers from Portland up to Eastport and many points between! Members of Les Sorciers Perdus include: Mark Tipton – trumpet, Danny Fisher-Lochhead – saxophone, Ryan Blotnick – guitar, Tyler Heydolph – bass, and Beau Lisy – drums.

Les Sorciers Perdus at FOGTOWN
The French called him “Bricolo,” and silent film scholars have placed him in league with Charlie Chaplin & Buster Keaton in terms of ingenuity, style, and overall hilarity! Join Les Sorciers Perdus at 7pm on Friday, August 23rd, 2019 at Fogtown Brewing Co. in Ellsworth for a wild romp through two of Charley Bowers’ short silent masterpieces (TBD) with NEW scores by Mark Tipton, plus a jazz set featuring new works by members of the ensemble…and a classic tune or two!

Les Sorciers Perdus – JOAN OF ARC @ MIFF
La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, (The Passion of Joan of Arc) is Carl Theodore Dreyer’s undisputed masterpiece (1928). Based on the actual record of Joan of Arc’s trial, this silent film is as mesmerizing as it is eerily modern. Considered one of the greatest films in history, “The Passion of Joan of Arc” stars the inimitable Renée Jeanne Falconetti as the title character, with supporting roles played by Eugène Silvain, André Berley, and Maurice Schutz. Shot on a colossal concrete set based on medieval architecture, “Joan of Arc” employs a unique approach to cinematography and close-ups, (for instance, actors were not permitted to wear make-up!).
Mark Tipton’s new score explores the pathos of this remarkable film, with a special emphasis placed on embracing and enhancing the impact of Falconetti’s amazing performance – without detracting from it one iota. Performed live with a screening of the film, as part of the 2019 Maine International Film Festival (MIFF). Les Sorciers Perdus is: Mark Tipton – trumpet, Danny Fisher-Lochhead – alto sax, Ryan Blotnick – guitar, Tyler Heydolph – bass, Beau Lisy – percussion.
The New York Times film critic Mordaunt Hall wrote an enthusiastic review at the time of the US premiere – here’s an excerpt:
“… as a film work of art this takes precedence over anything that has so far been produced. It makes worthy pictures of the past look like tinsel shams. It fills one with such intense admiration that other pictures appear but trivial in comparison… it is the gifted performance of…Falconetti as the Maid of Orleans that rises above everything in this artistic achievement.”
(The film’s duration is ca. 81min.)
Chris Sprague Memorial Concert – DIJ

HISTORY: As far as documented records show, “Grand Hotel” was first show at the Criterion Theatre in Bar Harbor at 2:30pm and 8:30pm on July 14th, 15th, and 16th, 1932, and – back by popular demand – it was re-screened during the weekend of December 29th, 30th, and 31st, 1932. Les Sorciers Perdus – NEW Silent Film Scores!
SOLD OUT!
Les Sorciers Perdus return to David & Regine Whittlesey’s acclaimed house-concert series in Bowdoinham for the premiere of several brand-new silent film scores by Mark (see below). This is a pot-luck followed by a screening of the films with live music in a cozy, friendly atmosphere!
Buster Keaton: “Cops” (1922) – “Cops” centers around a clever, not-so-professional furniture moving scenario, and is chock full of goofy gags, culminating in a riveting chase sequence! This zany Keaton comedy short – also starring Virginia Fox and Joe Roberts – is universally considered to be one of his very best! [18min.]
Marion Davies: “The Patsy” (1928) – Marion Davies’ biggest hit of her career, “The Patsy” is a light-hearted romantic comedy also starring Marie Dressler, Orville Caldwell, Dell Henderson, Jane Winton, and Lawrence Gray, and directed by the legendary King Vidor, (The Big Parade, The Crowd). Pat Harrington (Davies) is the “patsy” (fool) in her family, who plays second fiddle to her sister (Winton) until she learns how to get some real personality! Featuring an extended scene where Davies impersonates silent cinema divas Lillian Gish, Mae Murray, and Pola Negri, “The Patsy” is pure cinema gold, featuring a strong female lead and a host of delightful surprises! [77min.]
Les Sorciers Perdus is: Mark Tipton – trumpet & keyboard, Ryan Blotnick – guitar, Tyler Heydolph – bass, and Beau Lisy – drums. LSP has performed over 25 silent film scores by Mark, including “7th Heaven” (1927) at MIFF 2018, “Sunrise” (1927) at MIFF 2017, “The Phantom Carriage” (1921) at The Grand, “Nosferatu” (1922) at the 1932 Criterion Theatre, “Robin Hood” (1922) at The Strand Theatre, “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” (1920) at SPACE Gallery, and “Metropolis” (1927) at the Colonial Theater. The group released an album of original jazz in 2017 titled “Alchemist’s Dream,” and will be back in the studio in 2019.
Les Sorciers Perdus perform NOSFERATU at the 1932 Criterion Theatre
Mark Tipton leads Les Sorciers Perdus in a live performance of his original 2017 score for an exclusive screening of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror at the 1932 Criterion Theatre. The progenitor of all vampire films, Murnau’s German Expressionist masterpiece is loosely based on Bram Stoker’s gothic novel “Dracula” (1897), and takes viewers on a wild, insidious ride from sleepy Wisborg to Count Orlok’s terrifying castle in Transylvania! Mark’s tightly-woven, meticulously-syncronized new score blends jazz, classical, folk, and avant-garde styles to portray through music the broad emotional and psychological scope of this cult classic. Nosferatu has inspired generations of filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock and Werner Herzog – who remade it in 1979 with the inimitable Klaus Kinski. With a 4-star review by Roger Ebert and a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Nosferatu won’t disappoint!
“F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film ”Nosferatu” was the first great vampire movie, and it remains, after generations of copies, remakes and rip-offs, among the scariest. In composing his ”symphony of horrors,” Murnau tapped into the murky depths of European folklore and the reservoir of superstition beneath the cool, rational surface of modern life. The film’s images — a desolate castle, a rat-infested ghost ship and above all the hollow visage of Max Schreck in the title role — emerge from a commonplace book of nightmares.” (A. O. Scott – New York Times)
Featuring Mark Tipton on Trumpet & Keyboard, Ryan Blotnick on Guitar, Tyler Heydolph on Bass, and Beau Lisy on Percussion.
*ONE SCREENING ONLY, so please reserve your tickets early!
ALSO, the 1932 Criterion Theatre has teamed up with Bar Harbor Ghost Tours for an exclusive 10pm-2am ghost hunting event (ages 18 and up) the same night! Details are soon to be announced! http://www.criteriontheatre.org/

“Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood” with Les Sorciers Perdus at The Strand Theatre
Les Sorciers Perdus perform Mark’s new score for “Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood” (1922) at The Strand Theatre in Rockland, Maine. Directed by Allan Dwan, “Robin Hood” stars Douglas Fairbanks as Robin Hood, Enid Bennett as Lady Marian Fitzwalter, Wallace Beery as King Richard The Lion-Hearted, and Sam De Grasse as Prince John. Set in 12th Century Nottingham, complete with a towering castle designed by Frank Lloyd Wright’s son, Lloyd Wright, the enormous sets were said to have overwhelmed Fairbanks at first sight – to the point where he nearly canceled production! The sets, as well as the meticulous costumes and over 1,200 extras contributed greatly to the film’s nearly $1,000,000 budget – a fortune in its time! Considered a “lost film” until the 1960’s, this gorgeous restoration by the George Eastman House and the Museum of Modern Art in 2009 will appeal to silent film neophytes and film cognoscenti alike!
*There is one screening only, so reserve your tickets early!*
Mark’s new score employs contemporary jazz, folk and classical styles to portray in music the epic visual scope of this over 2-hour film. Considered director Allan Dwan’s masterpiece, “Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood” has never looked better on the big screen, and with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this film will not disappoint!

WORLD PREMIER: Mark’s new score for “Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood” with Les Sorciers Perdus!
Les Sorciers Perdus perform Mark’s new score for “Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood” (1922) at The Grand in Ellsworth, Maine.
